Maternity and Parental Leave – Canada

  • Ladies are entitled to up to 15 weeks paid at 55% but capped 650 CAD per week. This is classed as maternity pay.
  • There are two other parental leave policies which can be claimed after Maternity leave.
    • Standard parental, which can be paid for a maximum of 40 weeks and shared between both parents, but one parent cannot claim this benefit for more than 35 weeks. This is paid at 55% and capped at 650 CAD.
    • Extended parental leave, which can be paid for a maximum of 69 weeks and shared between both parents, but one parent cannot claim this benefit for more than 61 weeks. This is paid at 33% and capped at 390 CAD.

Maternity benefits can be followed by parental benefits, either standard or extended and claimed for at the same time.

The accountants did advise that a maternity top up benefit can be initiated by Employers to top this value up for maternity benefit.
